How to Fix an iPhone Calendar Rendered Useless by Scheduled Reminders
Installing regular operating system updates are a good idea on every device. While Apple devices and operating systems have traditionally been known to be targeted by hackers less frequently, the greater the number of users on any operating system, the larger the target becomes. At this point, Apple operating systems can no longer be assumed to be less valuable targets, meaning everyone should keep up on their updates to ensure the latest security patches are installed as soon as possible. Unfortunately, updates can also introduce new issues.
This post discusses how to fix the iPhone issue rendering calendars useless because they are being crammed full of scheduled reminders.
How to Fix an iPhone Calendar Rendered Useless by Scheduled Reminders
This issue was caused by a recent iOS update, and unfortunately, Apple devices do not really have an uninstall update utility like Windows devices do. In this case, what's happening to a calendar is it is being filled up with scheduled reminders, which are listed above scheduled calendar events, and people are not noticing meetings and other events they had scheduled for the day.
Scheduled reminders are being listed at the top of the day, much like an all day event would be, which is in turn pushing down scheduled events. The worst part is that some scheduled events can be weekly and yet show up on the calendar for that day multiple times. In our example below, a weekly scheduled reminder showed up on a single day multiple times. The image shows four times, but the item actually showed up eight separate times.
To fix an iPhone calendar being rendered useless because it is crammed full of scheduled reminders:
- Open the Calendar app.
- Touch the "Calendars" icon at the bottom of the calendar screen.
In the Calendars menu, you should be able to see that Scheduled Reminders are set to display within the calendar application which is why they are there. Unfortunately, there is a bug within either the reminders or the calendar app, which is why scheduled reminders are appearing multiple times on a single day when they are set up in reminders as a singular repeating reminder. In our case, it did not matter if the item was weekly or monthly, it still appeared multiple times on the selected date.
- From here, simply disable the Scheduled Reminders in your calendar to temporarily remove these from your calendar.
- Touch "Done" in the upper right corner to save this setting.
Disabling the scheduled reminders from showing up on your calendar is a temporary fix to them taking over your calendar until a fix is released to address this software bug. When the fix is released, simply go back to the same menu and re-enable "Scheduled Reminders" on your calendar so that these items will once again be listed on your calendar.
If your calendar has been essentially rendered useless by duplicate scheduled reminders recently, this is likely caused by a recent software bug and not anything you did wrong. The best thing you can do for now is to disable scheduled reminders on your calendar as scheduled reminders will still alert you based on when you set the schedule for each one. Once an update is pushed out to fix the issue, simply re-enable these on your calendar if this is your preference.
As always, understanding what is going on and what you can do to make your phone more usable helps prevent frustration and saves time!
